Perimenopause/menopause

What is perimenopause?

It is the time when your body starts to transition into the menopause, marking the end of your productive years. Typically, it starts at the age of 40 - 44, however, some women may be induced into a premature menopause at an earlier age due to health implications.

During this time, your body produces less oestrogen, progesterone and testosterone, this culminates in many symptoms from irregular periods, bone density ,with the increased levels of oestrogen through time, there is an increased risk of developing osteoporosis, you may experience hair thinning or loss, insomnia, loss of libido, anxiety, weight gain, brain fog, loss of identity to name but a few of the symptoms that typically can occur in this transitional period. One size does not fit all, some women have little or no symptoms, and some may be relieved that they no longer ovulate.

The menopausal transition from perimenopause to menopause can last an average of 7-14 years.

How can this affect your skin?

As oestrogen levels fluctuate, perimenopause-menopausal women notice that this affects their skin’s ability to retain ceramides and fatty acids that helps your skin lock in moisture.

Due to these hormonal changes and depletion of oestrogen, the skin loses its tone and elasticity, leading to wrinkles and the formation of jowls, this is a gradual process through time, as hormonal changes fluctuate, one’s skin can become dull, you may experience acne breakouts and dry skin.
